Low-Profile vs Standard
Keyboards: What’s The Difference?
Just like everything else, keyboards are evolving rapidly with technology. Compared to the days where membrane keyboards were the only thing you could buy, we now have plenty of different options in terms of switches, layout and keyboard selections.
Although not mentioned as frequently as layouts and switches, the profile of a keyboard can make a difference in the way it looks, feels and sounds. There are two profile options you should consider when buying a mechanical keyboard: low-profile and standard.
Here are four aspects that make low-profile keyboards different.
The Height
- The main difference between low-profile and standard keyboards is the height.
- The overall height of low-profile keyboards is far shorter than regular boards through shorter keycaps, switches and cases.
- Compared to normal keyboards, low-profile options are 2/3 or even half the height of a regular board.
Low-Profile Switches
To achieve this lower height, low profile keyboards require switches that are also low-profile. These shorter switches have a smaller travel distance and usually sound different compared to their regular switch counterparts.
While slimmer, low-profile switches retain the spring structure and the feel of a mechanical switch.
An advantage of a shorter travel distance is that it makes it faster to input keys, especially if you aren’t bottoming the keys out. Inputs being faster is especially beneficial in gaming as milliseconds can change the outcome of a game at times.
Ergonomics
- Since you don’t have to raise your hands up as much to type on a low-profile keyboard, they can be far more comfortable.
- Unlike with normal keyboards where people often need a wrist rest for comfort, the short height results in less strain on your wrists, allowing for longer typing or gaming sessions.
Portability
- The shorter height and slimmer body makes it easy to put low-profile keyboards in your bag and to take with you anywhere.
- Those who need to carry their keyboard around often can definitely benefit from low-profile keyboards as they take up less space and weigh less.
Should You Get A Low-Profile Keyboard?
This depends all on your situation and preferences.
• Do you want a more minimalist setup?
• Do you want a more ergonomic experience but you don’t want to make the switch to an ergonomic keyboard?
• Do you want a more competitive edge for gaming?
• Do you like to travel with a dedicated keyboard?
If you feel like any of these aspects are important to you, then getting a low-profile keyboard is a great option.
